Coates 1989 CHINGESCAMP, lost Domesday Book manor in Broughton hundred The name means 'king's camp' where 'camp' is 'uncultivated land on the edge of a villa estate' (Gelling 1978: 74-8). In this hundred (called 'Thorngate' in the Middle Ages) we find the Roman road from Old Sarum to Winchester (Margary 45a). Roman buildings have been found at East and West Dean, and the name of MOTTISFONT also testifies to Roman activity. |
